A Reassurance

Deuteronomy 30:1-10

After warning the people what will befall them if they stray from God’s service, Moses reassures them that all is not lost. When these things befall the nation, they will be moved to return to God. God will then bring them back from exile among the nations and restore them to their land, with greater prosperity and blessing than they had before. All that the Israelites suffer will ultimately be revisited upon the heads of their enemies, and with the nation’s complete return to the ways of God, He will rejoice over them as He did over their forefathers.

The Israel Bible points out that this portion is read each year in the week prior to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The theme of redemption and return to the Land of Israel is closely related to the themes of the holiday. Rosh Hashanah is a time to restore one’s relationship with God, and recognize His dominion over the whole world. Only when the Jewish People return to their land will the entire world recognize God as the King of the Universe.

Moses says God will “circumcise thy heart” (30:6). What do you think this means and why would He do so?

    Jer. 4, 3-4

Here’s another Message from God to the people of Judah and Jerusalem: “Plow your unplowed fields, but then don’t plant weeds in the soil! Yes, circumcise your lives for God’s sake. Plow your unplowed hearts, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem

It's the outward sign of a new heart that will know God.

Cut off from your body, soul and spirit all that is evil. Make a willful determination that all sin is despicable, something that should have no part in any part of you.

  • I like everyone ones comments. I might add: to have a circumcised heart means to have a heart in submission to the will of Adonai. To do the mitzvot and ordinances not because we feel obligated to do them but to do them because we love to follow our Adonai. He detected the blood of bulls because they did it out of wrote. They did not understand that it was their love that he wanted.

  • Circumcision (brit mila) means taking away part of the foreskin. It is done to all siblings at day 8. It means to take part into the bond with HaShem. It also means a continuation in the generational line of this bond. It is a sign of the unity HaShem once had with Avraham on the body of the child. Circumscision of the heart means to be cut of from the desires of the heart that are not according the prescriptions of HaShem. So, such a person does only what HaShem wants and has laid in his/her heart, living up according to His will, to His mitswot.

  • It means to give one a change of heart, a new birth, just like Yeshua told Nicodemus (a teacher of the law (Torah)). When one experiences this, they have the strength to do Yahweh's commandments, even when it would ordinarily be hard to so.

    • Your explanation is just beautiful. "They have the strength to do the Lord's commandments". We cannot do it without Him.

Circumcision was the visual sign of the covenant between the Lord and His people — but neglected during the wilderness wandering —– so circumcision of the heart is a reference to their need for repentance —–genuine brokenness—- as their covenant with the Lord had been broken through disobedience resulting in idolatrous practices. Moses realised that through humbling their hearts, accepting their guilt, turning away from sin, their hearts would be purified so they would be ready to hear and obey his statues v10 and the covenant remembered again by the Lord.

    • I agree with you. It is a cutting away, once repented of, that which does not belong in a heart totally given to HaShem. A heart, inner covenant not of the outer flesh.

Circumcision of the heart means that the people will love God genuinely in their hearts and minds as opposed to obeying the commandment to be circumcised in the flesh which could be done without genuine commitment.
God would do this so that He can enter into a relationship with them and give them life.
