29  And the rest of the people, the Kohanim, the Leviim, the porters, the singers, the Nethinim, and all they that had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one that had knowledge and understanding;

30  they cleaved to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moshe the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of Hashem our Lord, and His ordinances and His statutes;

32  and if the peoples of the land bring ware or any victuals on the Shabbat day to sell, that we would not buy of them on the Shabbat, or on a holy day; and that we would forego the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.

33  Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;

34  for the showbread, and for the continual meal-offering, and for the continual burnt-offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the appointed seasons, and for the holy things, and for the sin-offerings to make atonement for Yisrael, and for all the work of the house of our God.

10:34   And for the continual meal-offering, and for the continual burnt-offering

The last ten verses of this chapter focus on the pledge to revive the many sacrificial obligations. The Hebrew word for sacrifice or offering, ‘korban,’ indicates its true purpose. ‘Korban’ comes from the word ‘karov’ which means close. The ‘korban’ facilitates a close relationship between man and God. Although the ‘korbanot’ themselves can only be brought in the Land of Israel at the Temple, the core idea behind them is timeless, spaceless and intended for all humanity. In the absence of the Temple and the sacrifices, we use prayer as a means of coming close our Father in Heaven. As the verse is Hosea says “so will we render for bullocks the offering of our lips” (Hosea 14:3).

Comment

35  And we cast lots, the Kohanim, the Leviim, and the people, for the wood-offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers’ houses, at times appointed, year by year, to burn upon the altar of Hashem our God, as it is written in the Law;

36  and to bring the first-fruits of our land, and the first-fruits of all fruit of all manner of trees, year by year, unto the house of Hashem;

37  also the first-born of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the Law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the Kohanim that minister in the house of our God;

38  and that we should bring the first of our dough, and our heave-offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, the wine and the oil, unto the Kohanim, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our land unto the Leviim; for they, the Leviim, take the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.

39  And the Kohen the son of Aharon shall be with the Leviim, when the Leviim take tithes; and the Leviim shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure-house.

40  For B’nei Yisrael and the children of Levi shall bring the heave-offering of the corn, of the wine, and of the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the Kohanim that minister, and the porters, and the singers; and we will not forsake the house of our God.

  • V 1 – Covenant!! I remember some years ago, in some sort of teaching situation and it was pointed out that HaShem did not enter into an agreement …. but He made a ‘Covenant’ so too did the Israelites. I believe that in legal terms an agreement can be broken so to can a contract, with cost, but they can still be broken. When God made this Covenant there was to be no breaking of it, by him, and though the Israelites broke their side, time and time again HaShem kept His word. Such is the greatness of our Heavenly Father!

  • I’ve been thinking more about this. When we get married we enter into a covenant relationship with our spouse, husband/wife it too should not be broken. I think that by and large there is little teaching on the differences between covenant, agreement/contract cum treaty.
