10:34   For the regular meal offering

The last ten verses of this chapter focus on the pledge to revive the many sacrificial obligations. The word for ’sacrifice’ or ‘offering,’ korban (קרבן), indicates its true purpose. Korban comes from the word karov (קרוב) which means ‘close.’ The korban facilitates a close relationship between man and God. Although the korbanot can only be brought in Yerushalayim, the core idea behind them is timeless and universal, intended for all humanity. In the absence of the Beit Hamikdash and its sacrifices, we use prayer as a means of coming close to our Father in Heaven. As the verse is Hoshea says “Instead of bulls we will pay [the offering of] our lips” (Hosea 14:3).Comment

35  “We have cast lots [among] the kohanim, the Leviim, and the people, to bring the wood offering to the House of our God by clans annually at set times in order to provide fuel for the mizbayach of Hashem our God, as is written in the Teaching.

36  “And [we undertake] to bring to the House of Hashem annually the first fruits of our soil, and of every fruit of every tree;

37  also, the first-born of our sons and our beasts, as is written in the Teaching; and to bring the firstlings of our cattle and flocks to the House of our God for the kohanim who minister in the House of our God.

38  “We will bring to the storerooms of the House of our God the first part of our dough, and our gifts [of grain], and of the fruit of every tree, wine and oil for the kohanim, and the tithes of our land for the Leviim—the Leviim who collect the tithe in all our towns subject to royal service.

39  An Aharonite kohen must be with the Leviim when they collect the tithe, and the Leviim must bring up a tithe of the tithe to the House of our God, to the storerooms of the treasury.

40  For it is to the storerooms that the Israelites and the Leviim must bring the gifts of grain, wine, and oil. The equipment of the sanctuary and of the ministering kohanim and the gatekeepers and the singers is also there. “We will not neglect the House of our God.”

  • V 1 – Covenant!! I remember some years ago, in some sort of teaching situation and it was pointed out that HaShem did not enter into an agreement …. but He made a ‘Covenant’ so too did the Israelites. I believe that in legal terms an agreement can be broken so to can a contract, with cost, but they can still be broken. When God made this Covenant there was to be no breaking of it, by him, and though the Israelites broke their side, time and time again HaShem kept His word. Such is the greatness of our Heavenly Father!

  • I’ve been thinking more about this. When we get married we enter into a covenant relationship with our spouse, husband/wife it too should not be broken. I think that by and large there is little teaching on the differences between covenant, agreement/contract cum treaty.
