Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  The burden of Ninveh. The book of the vision of Nachum the Elkoshite.

2  Hashem is a jealous and avenging God Hashem avengeth and is full of wrath; Hashem taketh vengeance on His adversaries and He reserveth wrath for His enemies.

3  Hashem is long-suffering and great in power and will by no means clear the guilty; Hashem in the whirlwind and in the storm is His way and the clouds are the dust of His feet.

4  He rebuketh the sea and maketh it dry and drieth up all the rivers; Bashan languisheth and Carmel and the flower of Levanon languisheth.

1:4  Bashan languisheth

Nahum begins his prophecy by addressing Nineveh, the capital city of Assyria. He depicts God’s control over nature, and indicates that just as He rules over nature, so does the Lord rule over humanity and will punish Israel’s enemies. In this verse, Nahum first describes how God dries up the seas and the rivers, a reference to the miracle of the Red Sea (Exodus 15) and the crossing of the Jordan river (Joshua 3). He then says that Bashan, Carmel, and Lebanon, the three most luxuriant areas of the Holy Land, thought to be immune to drought, will dry up before God’s presence. Biblical Bashan was located on the east side of the Jordan river in modern day Syria. It was captured by the Israelites from Og, king of Bashan, who came out against them as they prepared to enter the Land of Israel (Numbers 21:33-35), and given to half the tribe of Manasseh (Joshua 13:29-31). The land of Bashan is known in the Bible for its rich pastures (Jeremiah 50:19), oak forests (Isaiah 2:13) and majestic mountains (Psalms 68:16).

5  The mountains quake at Him and the hills melt; and the earth is upheaved at His presence yea the world and all that dwell therein.

6  Who can stand before His indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire and the rocks are broken asunder before Him.

7  Hashem is good a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that take refuge in Him.

8  But with an overrunning flood He will make a full end of the place thereof and darkness shall pursue His enemies.

9  What do ye devise against Hashem? He will make a full end; trouble shall not rise up the second time.

10  For though they be like tangled thorns and be drunken according to their drink they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

11  Out of thee came he forth that deviseth evil against Hashem that counselleth wickedness.

12  Thus saith Hashem: Though they be in full strength and likewise many even so shall they be cut down and he shall pass away; and though I have afflicted thee I will afflict thee no more.

13  And now will I break his yoke from off thee and will burst thy bonds in sunder.

14  And Hashem hath given commandment concerning thee that no more of thy name be sown; out of the house of thy god will I cut off the graven image and the molten image; I will make thy grave; for thou art become worthless.

  • “7 The LORD is good a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that take refuge in Him.”
This is a verse of great comfort as it’s clear that the days of “Ya’acov’s Trouble” are at hand. There is no comfort in anything in this world that people look to for safety and protection. Our only hope is in Him and in His promises. Baruch Hashem.
