INTRO 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  The word of Hashem that came to Micha the Morashtite in the days of Yotam Achaz and Chizkiyahu kings of Yehudah which he saw concerning Shomron and Yerushalayim.

2  Hear ye peoples all of you; Hearken O earth and all that therein is; and let the Lord GOD be witness against you the Lord from His holy temple.

3  For behold Hashem cometh forth out of His place and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth.

4  And the mountains shall be molten under Him and the valleys shall be cleft as wax before the fire as waters that are poured down a steep place.

5  For the transgression of Yaakov is all this and for the sins of the house of Yisrael. What is the transgression of Yaakov? is it not Shomron? And what are the high places of Yehudah? are they not Yerushalayim?

6  Therefore I will make Shomron a heap in the field a place for the planting of vineyards; and I will pour down the stones thereof into the valley and I will uncover the foundations thereof.

7  And all her graven images shall be beaten to pieces and all her hires shall be burned with fire and all her idols will I lay desolate; for of the hire of a harlot hath she gathered them and unto the hire of a harlot shall they return.

8  For this will I wail and howl I will go stripped and naked; I will make a wailing like the jackals and a mourning like the ostriches.

9  For her wound is incurable; for it is come even unto Yehudah; it reacheth unto the gate of my people even to Yerushalayim.

10  Tell it not in Gath weep not at all; at Beth-le-aphrah roll thyself in the dust.

11  Pass ye away O inhabitant of Saphir in nakedness and shame; the inhabitant of Zaanan is not come forth; the wailing of Beth-ezel shall take from you the standing-place thereof.

12  For the inhabitant of Maroth waiteth anxiously for good; because evil is come down from Hashem unto the gate of Yerushalayim.

13  Bind the chariots to the swift steeds O inhabitant of Lachish; she was the beginning of sin to the daughter of Tzion; for the transgressions of Yisrael are found in thee.

r’-TOM ha-mer-ka-VAH la-RE-khesh yo-SHE-vet la-KHEESH ray-SHEET kha-TAT hee l’-VAT tzi-YON kee vakh nim-tz’-U pish-AY yis-ra-AYL

1:13  O inhabitant of Lachish

Micah tells the inhabitants of Lachish to prepare to flee the oncoming enemy, and states that this city was the beginning of Judah’s downfall. Lachish, located 30 miles southwest of Jerusalem, was fortified by Reheboam (II Chronicles 11:5-12), and was the Southern Kingdom’s second largest military outpost. Its location was strategic, as it guarded the mountain pass to get to Jerusalem and the interior of the Kingdom of Judah. However, Lachish was captured long before Judah fell to the Babylonians by Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians, during his attempt to capture Jerusalem at the time of King Hezekiah. Today, excavations at Lachish reveal not only the largest siege ramp discovered in the Middle East, but the largest Iron Age structure discovered in the Land of Israel. Micah mocks the Israelites trust in their horses and military prowess instead of God’s protection.

Comment

14  Therefore shalt thou give a parting gift to Moresheth-gath; the houses of Achzib shall be a deceitful thing unto the kings of Yisrael.

15  I will yet bring unto thee O inhabitant of Mareshah him that shall possess thee; the glory of Yisrael shall come even unto Adullam.

16  Make thee bald and poll thee for the children of thy delight; enlarge thy baldness as the vulture; for they are gone into captivity from thee.
