1:5  Great is Hashem beyond the borders of Yisrael

Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra (1089-1167)

Unlike the people of Edom, whose evil behavior causes God to cast them away repeatedly and call their boundary “the region of wickedness” (verses 3-4), Hashem’s love for Israel is unending and unconditional (verse 2). When the Jewish people recognize this, it will be declared that “Hashem is great beyond the border of Israel.” These words can be understood in two ways. The commentator Ibn Ezra suggests that it means even those outside of Israel will say “Hashem is great.” More likely, it means that the People of Israel themselves will call out excitedly “Great is Hashem, beyond the borders of Yisrael.

  • During the reign of King Solomon, the world knew of and marveled at the wisdom of this Israelite King. His reputation had traveled throughout the known world and when it reached the Queen of Sheba, she was drawn to travel to Y’srael to see this matter for herself. It’s clear that people outside of the borders were able to see that “God is great”.
When Y’srael lived righteously, they brought honor and glory to Elohim. When they walked treacherously, they brought shame to His Name. The burden has always been on them to uphold the Name of Elohim for all to see and to extol. The world watches Y’srael, some with hope and others with contempt and disdain.
As the Prophets say, the final matter will be determined there.
    Baruch Hashem!
