Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  Hear this O ye Kohanim and attend ye house of Yisrael and give ear O house of the king for unto you pertaineth the judgment; for ye have been a snare on Mitzpah and a net spread upon Tavor.

5:1  For ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor

Hosea targets the leadership of Israel for failing the people, calling them “a snare upon Mitzpah and a net spread upon Tabor.” These two places carry strong echoes from Israel’s history. Mitzpah is a site of Israelite worship of God in the times of the Judges (Judges 20:1). The Lord saves His people at Mizpah during the time of Samuel (I Samuel 7:10-11), and it is the place where the tribes gather to demand Israel’s first king, Saul (I Samuel 8-12). The mountain of Tabor is where the tribes gather together to fight Jabin of Hazor and his general Sisera (Judges 4-5). The same places where the Lord brought salvation to His people in the past, are now used as places of sin and rebellion against the Lord.

Comment

2  And they that fall away are gone deep in making slaughter; and I am rejected of them all.

3  I even I know Efraim and Yisrael is not hid from Me; for now O Efraim thou hast committed harlotry Yisrael is defiled.

4  Their doings will not suffer them to return unto their God; for the spirit of harlotry is within them and they know not Hashem.

5  But the pride of Yisrael shall testify to his face; and Yisrael and Efraim shall stumble in their iniquity Yehudah also shall stumble with them.

6  With their flocks and with their herds they shall go to seek Hashem but they shall not find Him; He hath withdrawn Himself from them.

7  They have dealt treacherously against Hashem for they have begotten strange children; now shall the new moon devour them with their portions.

8  Blow ye the horn in Givah and the trumpet in Ramah; sound an alarm at Beit Aven: ‘Behind thee O Benjamin!’

9  Efraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke; among the tribes of Yisrael do I make known that which shall surely be.

10  The princes of Yehudah are like them that remove the landmark; I will pour out My wrath upon them like water.

11  Oppressed is Efraim crushed in his right; because he willingly walked after filth.

12  Therefore am I unto Efraim as a moth and to the house of Yehudah as rottenness.

13  And when Efraim saw his sickness and Yehudah his wound Efraim went to Ashur and sent to King Contentious; but he is not able to heal you neither shall he cure you of your wound.

14  For I will be unto Efraim as a lion and as a young lion to the house of Yehudah; I even I will tear and go away I will take away and there shall be none to deliver.

15  I will go and return to My place till they acknowledge their guilt and seek My face; in their trouble they will seek Me earnestly:
