Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  The words of Amos, a sheepbreeder from Tekoa, who prophesied concerning Yisrael in the reigns of Kings Uzziyahu of Yehuda and Yerovam son of Yoash of Yisrael, two years before the earthquake.

2  He proclaimed: Hashem roars from Tzion, Shouts aloud from Yerushalayim; And the pastures of the shepherds shall languish, And the summit of Carmel shall wither.

3  hus said Hashem: For three transgressions of Damascus, For four, I will not revoke it: Because they threshed Gilad With threshing boards of iron.

4  I will send down fire upon the palace of Hazael, And it shall devour the fortresses of Ben-hadad.

5  I will break the gate bars of Damascus, And wipe out the inhabitants from the Vale of Aven And the sceptered ruler of Beth-eden; And the people of Aram shall be exiled to Kir —said Hashem.

6  Thus said Hashem: For three transgressions of Azza, For four, I will not revoke it: Because they exiled an entire population, Which they delivered to Edom.

7  I will send down fire upon the wall of Azza, And it shall devour its fortresses;

8  And I will wipe out the inhabitants of Ashdod And the sceptered ruler of Ashkelon; And I will turn My hand against Ekron, And the Philistines shall perish to the last man —said Hashem.

9  Thus said Hashem: For three transgressions of Tyre, For four, I will not revoke it: Because they handed over An entire population to Edom, Ignoring the covenant of brotherhood.

10  I will send down fire upon the wall of Tyre, And it shall devour its fortresses.

11  Thus said Hashem: For three transgressions of Edom, For four, I will not revoke it: Because he pursued his brother with the sword And repressed all pity, Because his anger raged unceasing And his fury stormed unchecked.

1:11  Because his anger raged unceasing

Amos delivers a harsh prophecy against the southern nation of Edom. When the land of Israel could no longer bear to have both Yaakov and Esau dwell there together, Esau chose to leave for Mount Seir, which became the territory of Edom (Genesis 36:6-8). The Edomites are traditionally thought to be descendants of Esau, and are held accountable for maintaining the fires of enmity and hatred towards Yaakov’s descendants. Their hatred for Yaakov’s descendants was so great, and lasted so long, that during Yehuda’s downfall at the hands of the Babylonians, the Edomites rejoiced and cheered, took spoils from the war and even helped the Babylonians capture Israelites who tried to escape (Obadiah 1:10-15). Their sin was even more heinous because Israel was proscribed from attacking them (Deuteronomy 2:4), and because they refused to abandon old hatreds. Once a prosperous area (I Samuel 14:47), the land of Edom is today a desolate desert, as promised in Yechezkel (35:9), “I will make you a desolation for all time; your towns shall never be inhabited, and you shall know that I am Hashem.Comment

12  I will send down fire upon Teman, And it shall devour the fortresses of Bozrah.

13  Thus said Hashem: For three transgressions of the Amonites, For four, I will not revoke it: Because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilad In order to enlarge their own territory.

14  I will set fire to the wall of Rabbah, And it shall devour its fortresses, Amid shouting on a day of battle, On a day of violent tempest.

15  Their king and his officers shall go Into exile together —said Hashem.
