INTRO 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  The words of Amos who was among the herdmen of Tekoa which he saw concerning Yisrael in the days of Uzziahu king of Yehudah and in the days of Yerovam the son of Yoash king of Yisrael two years before the earthquake.

2  And he said: Hashem roareth from Tzion and uttereth His voice from Yerushalayim; and the pastures of the shepherds shall mourn and the top of Carmel shall wither.

3  For thus saith Hashem: For three transgressions of Damesek yea for four I will not reverse it: because they have threshed Gilad with sledges of iron.

4  So will I send a fire into the house of Hazael and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad;

5  And I will break the bar of Damesek and cut off the inhabitant from Bikath-Aven and him that holdeth the sceptre from Beth-eden; and the people of Aram shall go into captivity unto Kir saith Hashem.

6  Thus saith Hashem: For three transgressions of Azzah yea for four I will not reverse it: because they carried away captive a whole captivity to deliver them up to Edom.

7  So will I send a fire on the wall of Azzah and it shall devour the palaces thereof;

8  And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon; and I will turn My hand against Ekron and the remnant of the Plishtim shall perish saith the Lord GOD.

9  Thus saith Hashem: For three transgressions of Tzor yea for four I will not reverse it: because they delivered up a whole captivity to Edom and remembered not the brotherly covenant.

10  So will I send a fire on the wall of Tzor and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

11  Thus saith Hashem: For three transgressions of Edom yea for four I will not reverse it: because he did pursue his brother with the sword and did cast off all pity and his anger did tear perpetually and he kept his wrath for ever.

1:11  And he kept his wrath for ever

Amos delivers a harsh prophecy against Edom in the south. When the Land of Israel could no longer bear to have both Jacob and Esau dwell there together, Esau chose to leave for Seir, which became the country of Edom (Genesis 36). The Edomites are traditionally thought to be descended from Esau, and are held accountable for maintaining the fires of enmity and hatred against Jacob’s descendants. Their hatred for Jacob’s descendants was so great, and lasted so long, that during Judah’s downfall at the hands of the Babylonians, the Edomites rejoiced and cheered, they took spoils from the war and they even helped the Babylonians capture Israelites who tried to escape (Obadiah 1:10-15). Their sin was even more heinous because Israel was proscribed from attacking them (Deuteronomy 2:4), and because they refused to abandon old hatreds. Once a prosperous area (I Samuel 14:47), the land of Edom is today a desolate desert, as promised in Ezekiel 35:9, “I will make thee perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not return; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.”

Comment

12  So will I send a fire upon Teman and it shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

13  Thus saith Hashem: For three transgressions of the children of Amon yea for four I will not reverse it: because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilad that they might enlarge their border.

14  So will I kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah and it shall devour the palaces thereof with shouting in the day of battle with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;

15  And their king shall go into captivity he and his princes together saith Hashem.
