Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  When Shlomo finished praying, fire descended from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of Hashem filled the House.

2  The Kohanim could not enter the House of Hashem, for the glory of Hashem filled the House of Hashem.

3  All the Israelites witnessed the descent of the fire and the glory of Hashem on the House; they knelt with their faces to the ground and prostrated themselves, praising Hashem, “For He is good, for His steadfast love is eternal.”

4  Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before Hashem.

5  King Shlomo offered as sacrifices 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep; thus the king and all the people dedicated the House of Hashem.

6  The Kohanim stood at their watches; the Leviim with the instruments for Hashem‘s music that King David had made to praise Hashem, “For His steadfast love is eternal,” by means of the psalms of David that they knew. The Kohanim opposite them blew trumpets while all Yisrael were standing.

7  Shlomo consecrated the center of the court in front of the House of Hashem, because he presented there the burnt offerings and the fat parts of the offerings of well-being, since the bronze mizbayach that Shlomo had made was not able to hold the burnt offerings, the meal offerings, and the fat parts.

8  At that time Shlomo kept the Feast for seven days—all Yisrael with him—a great assemblage from Lebo-hamath to the Wadi of Egypt.

9  On the eighth day they held a solemn gathering; they observed the dedication of the mizbayach seven days, and the Feast seven days.

10  On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he dismissed the people to their homes, rejoicing and in good spirits over the goodness that Hashem had shown to David and Shlomo and His people Yisrael.

11  Thus Shlomo finished building the House of Hashem and the royal palace; Shlomo succeeded in everything he had set his heart on accomplishing with regard to the House of Hashem and his palace.

12  Hashem appeared to Shlomo at night and said to him, “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this site as My House of sacrifice.

13  If I shut up the heavens and there is no rain; if I command the locusts to ravage the land; or if I let loose pestilence against My people,

14  when My people, who bear My name, humble themselves, pray, and seek My favor and turn from their evil ways, I will hear in My heavenly abode and forgive their sins and heal their land.

v’-yi-ka-n’-U a-MEE a-SHER nik-ra sh’-MEE a-lay-HEM v’-yit-pa-l’-LU vee-vak-SHU fa-NAI v’-ya-SHU-vu mi-dar-khay-HEM ha-ra-EEM va-a-NEE esh-MA min ha-sha-MA-yim v’-es-LAKH l’-kha-ta-TAM v’-er-PA et ar-TZAM

7:14  Forgive their sins and heal their land

The Children of Israel are God’s chosen people, and the Land of Israel is His chosen land. The people’s conduct directly influences what happens in the land, since Hashem responds to them with reward or punishment as appropriate. As such, the people feel a great attachment to the land, since it is through the land that God communicates whether or not His people are following His will.3 comments

15  Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayers from this place.

16  And now I have chosen and consecrated this House that My name be there forever. My eyes and My heart shall always be there.

17  As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked before Me, doing all that I have commanded you, keeping My laws and rules,

18  then I will establish your royal throne over Yisrael forever, in accordance with the Covenant I made with your father David, saying, ‘You shall never lack a descendant ruling over Yisrael.’

19  But if you turn away from Me and forsake My laws and commandments that I set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them,

20  then I will uproot them from My land that I gave them, and this House that I consecrated to My name I shall cast out of my sight, and make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.

21  And as for this House, once so exalted, everyone passing by it shall be appalled and say, ‘Why did Hashem do thus to this land and to this House?’

22  And the reply will be, ‘It is because they forsook God of their fathers who freed them from the land of Egypt, and adopted other gods and worshiped them and served them; therefore He brought all this calamity upon them.’”

    Romans 10:9-21
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.
20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

    Jeremiah 32:35-41
35And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. 36And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; 37Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: 38And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: 39And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: 40And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. 41Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.

  • It is obvious from these verses that prosperity in and on the land is subject to Shlomo and the Israelites keeping G-d's commandments and honouring Hashem. Blessing always comes with responsibility doesn't it! But we see that G-d has made it very clear to Shlomo that it's all on his terms – for all that Hashem says time and time again in 2 Chron that he will hear from heaven if the people repent. Such is the heart of Hashem, that he understands that we are not perfect and that there will be times when we do fail him, that even makes the way back to him.

What a promise for our land if we keep G-d's commandments. This is a verse [14] that has been heard and spoken around the world, as sometimes we stand in the gap for our countries sin, when we see G-dliness trampled underfoot by our leaders. So for Shlomo what weight he had on his shoulders. It behoves us to pray for our leaders!
