Listen to this chapter in Hebrew:

1  And it came to pass after this, that the children of Moav, and the children of Amon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Yehoshafat to battle.

2  Then there came some that told Yehoshafat, saying: ‘There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea from Aram; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-Tamar’–the same is En-gedi.

3  And Yehoshafat feared, and set himself to seek unto Hashem; and he proclaimed a fast throughout all Yehudah.

4  And Yehudah gathered themselves together, to seek help of Hashem; even out of all the cities of Yehudah they came to seek Hashem.

5  And Yehoshafat stood in the congregation of Yehudah and Yerushalayim, in the house of Hashem, before the new court;

6  and he said: ‘O Hashem, the God of our fathers, art not Thou alone God in heaven? and art not Thou ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? and in Thy hand is power and might, so that none is able to withstand Thee.

7  Didst not Thou, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before Thy people Yisrael, and gavest it to the seed of Avraham Thy friend for ever?

8  And they dwelt therein, and have built Thee a sanctuary therein for Thy name, saying:

9  If evil come upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before Thee–for Thy name is in this house–and cry unto Thee in our affliction, and Thou wilt hear and save.

10  And now, behold, the children of Amon and Moav and mount Seir, whom Thou wouldest not let Yisrael invade, when they came out of the land of Mitzrayim, but they turned aside from them, and destroyed them not;

11  behold, they render unto us [evil], to come to cast us out of Thy possession, which Thou hast given us to inherit.

12  O our God, wilt Thou not execute judgment on them? for we have no might against this great multitude that cometh against us; neither know we what to do; but our eyes are upon Thee.’

13  And all Yehudah stood before Hashem, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

14  Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaf, came the spirit of Hashem in the midst of the congregation;

15  and he said: ‘Hearken ye, all Yehudah, and ye inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and thou king Yehoshafat: thus saith Hashem unto you: Fear not ye, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

16  To-morrow go ye down against them; behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.

17  Ye shall not need to fight in this battle; set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of Hashem with you, O Yehudah and Yerushalayim; fear not, nor be dismayed; to-morrow go out against them; for Hashem is with you.’

18  And Yehoshafat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Yehudah and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim fell down before Hashem, worshipping Hashem.

19  And the Leviim, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Hashem, the God of Yisrael, with an exceeding loud voice.

20  And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went forth, Yehoshafat stood and said: ‘Hear me, O Yehudah, and ye inhabitants of Yerushalayim; believe in Hashem your God, so shall ye be established; believe His prophets, so shall ye prosper.’

21  And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed them that should sing unto Hashem, and praise in the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and say: ‘Give thanks unto Hashem, for His mercy endureth for ever.’

22  And when they began to sing and to praise, Hashem set liers-in-wait against the children of Amon, Moav, and mount Seir, that were come against Yehudah; and they were smitten.

23  For the children of Amon and Moav stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them; and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

24  And when Yehudah came to the watch-tower of the wilderness, they looked upon the multitude; and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none that escaped.

25  And when Yehoshafat and his people came to take the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much.

26  And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Beracah; for there they blessed Hashem; therefore the name of that place was called the valley of Beracah, unto this day.

u-va-YOM ha-r’-vi-EE nik-ha-LU l’-AY-mek b’-ra-KHAH kee sham bay-r’-KHU et a-do-NAI al kayn ka-r’-U et shaym ha-ma-KOM ha-HU AY-mek b’-ra-KHAH ad ha-YOM

20:26   Therefore the name of that place was called the valley of Beracah, unto this day

After God miraculously defeats their enemies, Jehoshaphat gathers the people together to bless the Lord. The site of this blessing is named “the valley of Beracah,” since ‘beracha’ is the Hebrew word for blessing. This valley is located in the Etzion block and surrounded by the Jewish towns of Carmei Tzur, Bat Ayin, Kfar Etzion and Alon Shvut. The land is truly blessed and is known for its fertile soil. The Gush Etzion Winery, located just outside the town of Alon Shvut, has an experimental vineyard in the valley. The grapes grown there are used for their high-end blended red series of wines known as Emek Bracha, Hebrew for valley of Beracah.

27  Then they returned, every man of Yehudah and Yerushalayim, and Yehoshafat in the forefront of them, to go back to Yerushalayim with joy; for Hashem had made them to rejoice over their enemies.

28  And they came to Yerushalayim with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of Hashem.

29  And a terror from God was on all the kingdoms of the countries, when they heard that Hashem fought against the enemies of Yisrael.

30  So the realm of Yehoshafat was quiet; for his God gave him rest round about.

31  And Yehoshafat reigned over Yehudah; he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Yerushalayim; and his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.

32  And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Hashem.

33  Howbeit the high places were not taken away; neither as yet had the people set their hearts unto the God of their fathers.

34  Now the rest of the acts of Yehoshafat, first and last, behold, they are written in the words of Yehu the son of Chanani, which is inserted in the book of the kings of Yisrael.

35  And after this did Yehoshafat king of Yehudah join himself with Achazyahu king of Yisrael; the same did very wickedly;

36  and he joined him with himself to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion-geber.

37  Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Yehoshafat, saying: ‘Because thou hast joined thyself with Achazyahu, Hashem hath made a breach in thy works.’ And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

  • Oh my! what an amazing chapter from Yehoshafat and that awesome prayer with all the people depending on Hashem to the word of G-d through Jahaziel and all believed! V 13 and I quote 'And all Yehudah stood before Hashem, with their little ones, their wives, and their children'. So the women and children were not counted/numbered? and yet the Jewish ancestry, I believe comes through the Mother and not the father as in Western ancestry. Can someone explain this to me please? I know in my Jewish ancestry my 5 x great grandfather married a gentile and so for our family the line was broken, even though the family still honoured some of the Jewish traditions for a few generations.

    For all that what an awesome day it would have been to see and be one of those who fasted and sought Hashem's face then to experience the victory and honour Hashem. Oh for leaders that did honour Hashem, what a different place the world would be.
