4:21  Hashem spoke to Moshe:

22  Take a census of the Gershonites also, by their ancestral house and by their clans.

23  Record them from the age of thirty years up to the age of fifty, all who are subject to service in the performance of tasks for the Tent of Meeting.

24  These are the duties of the Gershonite clans as to labor and porterage:

25  they shall carry the cloths of the Mishkan, the Tent of Meeting with its covering, the covering of dolphin skin that is on top of it, and the screen for the entrance of the Tent of Meeting;

26  the hangings of the enclosure, the screen at the entrance of the gate of the enclosure that surrounds the Mishkan, the cords thereof, and the mizbayach, and all their service equipment and all their accessories; and they shall perform the service.

27  All the duties of the Gershonites, all their porterage and all their service, shall be performed on orders from Aharon and his sons; you shall make them responsible for attending to all their porterage.

28  Those are the duties of the Gershonite clans for the Tent of Meeting; they shall attend to them under the direction of Itamar son of Aharon the Kohen.

29  As for the Merarites, you shall record them by the clans of their ancestral house;

30  you shall record them from the age of thirty years up to the age of fifty, all who are subject to service in the performance of the duties for the Tent of Meeting.

31  These are their porterage tasks in connection with their various duties for the Tent of Meeting: the planks, the bars, the posts, and the sockets of the Mishkan;

32  the posts around the enclosure and their sockets, pegs, and cords—all these furnishings and their service: you shall list by name the objects that are their porterage tasks.

33  Those are the duties of the Merarite clans, pertaining to their various duties in the Tent of Meeting under the direction of Itamar son of Aharon the Kohen.

34  So Moshe, Aharon, and the chieftains of the community recorded the Kohathites by the clans of their ancestral house,

37  That was the enrollment of the Kohathite clans, all those who performed duties relating to the Tent of Meeting, whom Moshe and Aharon recorded at the command of Hashem through Moshe.

44  those recorded by their clans came to 3,200.

5:1  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

2  Instruct the Israelites to remove from camp anyone with an eruption or a discharge and anyone defiled by a corpse.

4  The Israelites did so, putting them outside the camp; as Hashem had spoken to Moshe, so the Israelites did.

5  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

6  Speak to the Israelites: When a man or woman commits any wrong toward a fellow man, thus breaking faith with Hashem, and that person realizes his guilt,

5:6   When a man or woman commits any wrong toward a fellow man

After describing the camp of Israel in the desert with the Mishkan at its center, the Torah continues by detailing a series of laws that are seemingly unrelated to the camp, or to each other: Laws concerning theft, the wayward wife, and the nazirite. The connection between these different topics may be that all of these laws have to do with the high level of holiness and morality that the Children of Israel are expected to maintain, not only in their relationship with Hashem, but also in their human interactions. These laws represent three different types of relationships that require this type of sensitivity: Relations between a person and his fellow (theft), between a person and his family (the wayward wife), and between a person and himself (nazirite). Those who desire to ensure that Hashem’s presence will continue to rest among them must ensure that all their interpersonal interactions are characterized by respect and sensitivity.2 comments

7  he shall confess the wrong that he has done. He shall make restitution in the principal amount and add one-fifth to it, giving it to him whom he has wronged.

8  If the man has no kinsman to whom restitution can be made, the amount repaid shall go to Hashem for the Kohen—in addition to the ram of expiation with which expiation is made on his behalf.

9  So, too, any gift among the sacred donations that the Israelites offer shall be the Kohen‘s.

10  And each shall retain his sacred donations: each Kohen shall keep what is given to him.

11  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

12  Speak to B’nei Yisrael and say to them: If any man’s wife has gone astray and broken faith with him

13  in that a man has had carnal relations with her unbeknown to her husband, and she keeps secret the fact that she has defiled herself without being forced, and there is no witness against her—

14  but a fit of jealousy comes over him and he is wrought up about the wife who has defiled herself; or if a fit of jealousy comes over one and he is wrought up about his wife although she has not defiled herself—

15  the man shall bring his wife to the Kohen. And he shall bring as an offering for her one-tenth of an efah of barley flour. No oil shall be poured upon it and no frankincense shall be laid on it, for it is a meal offering of jealousy, a meal offering of remembrance which recalls wrongdoing.

16  The Kohen shall bring her forward and have her stand before Hashem.

17  The Kohen shall take sacral water in an earthen vessel and, taking some of the earth that is on the floor of the Mishkan, the Kohen shall put it into the water.

18  After he has made the woman stand before Hashem, the Kohen shall bare the woman’s head and place upon her hands the meal offering of remembrance, which is a meal offering of jealousy. And in the Kohen‘s hands shall be the water of bitterness that induces the spell.

19  The Kohen shall adjure the woman, saying to her, “If no man has lain with you, if you have not gone astray in defilement while married to your husband, be immune to harm from this water of bitterness that induces the spell.

20  But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and have defiled yourself, if a man other than your husband has had carnal relations with you”—

21  here the Kohen shall administer the curse of adjuration to the woman, as the Kohen goes on to say to the woman—“may Hashem make you a curse and an imprecation among your people, as Hashem causes your thigh to sag and your belly to distend;

22  may this water that induces the spell enter your body, causing the belly to distend and the thigh to sag.” And the woman shall say, “Amen, amen!”

23  The Kohen shall put these curses down in writing and rub it off into the water of bitterness.

24  He is to make the woman drink the water of bitterness that induces the spell, so that the spell-inducing water may enter into her to bring on bitterness.

25  Then the Kohen shall take from the woman’s hand the meal offering of jealousy, elevate the meal offering before Hashem, and present it on the mizbayach.

26  The Kohen shall scoop out of the meal offering a token part of it and turn it into smoke on the mizbayach. Last, he shall make the woman drink the water.

27  Once he has made her drink the water—if she has defiled herself by breaking faith with her husband, the spell-inducing water shall enter into her to bring on bitterness, so that her belly shall distend and her thigh shall sag; and the woman shall become a curse among her people.

28  But if the woman has not defiled herself and is pure, she shall be unharmed and able to retain seed.

29  This is the ritual in cases of jealousy, when a woman goes astray while married to her husband and defiles herself,

30  or when a fit of jealousy comes over a man and he is wrought up over his wife: the woman shall be made to stand before Hashem and the Kohen shall carry out all this ritual with her.

31  The man shall be clear of guilt; but that woman shall suffer for her guilt.

6:1  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

2  Speak to the Israelites and say to them: If anyone, man or woman, explicitly utters a nazirite’s vow, to set himself apart for Hashem,

3  he shall abstain from wine and any other intoxicant; he shall not drink vinegar of wine or of any other intoxicant, neither shall he drink anything in which grapes have been steeped, nor eat grapes fresh or dried.

4  Throughout his term as nazirite, he may not eat anything that is obtained from the grapevine, even seeds or skin.

5  Throughout the term of his vow as nazirite, no razor shall touch his head; it shall remain consecrated until the completion of his term as nazirite of Hashem, the hair of his head being left to grow untrimmed.

6  Throughout the term that he has set apart for Hashem, he shall not go in where there is a dead person.

7  Even if his father or mother, or his brother or sister should die, he must not defile himself for them, since hair set apart for his God is upon his head:

8  throughout his term as nazirite he is consecrated to Hashem.

 6:14   For a sin offering

The nazirite is someone who takes it upon himself to abstain from wine, from cutting his hair and from contracting spiritual impurity from a dead body. He accepts these voluntary restrictions for the purpose of coming closer to Hashem and elevating himself spiritually. In essence, a nazirite removes himself from the ills of society so that he can remain pure and holy. At first glance, this seems admirable, something to be lauded and emulated. Indeed, the verse refers to the nazirite as “consecrated to Hashem” (verse 8). However, at the completion of his period of abstinence, the nazirite is required to bring a sin-offering. What is his sin? The Talmud (Taanit 11a) explains that while it is important to set aside time to work on oneself and one’s personal growth, the ideal is not to remove oneself from society completely. Rather, we must try to elevate ourselves within society and bring the rest of the world up with us.2 comments

6:26 Bestow His favor upon you and grant you peace

The Priestly Blessing uttered by the Kohanim contains three parts. It begins with a blessing for prosperity and safety, continues with a blessing for Hashem’s grace, and climaxes with a blessing of peace. Indeed, the Sages of the Mishna (Oktzin 3:12) taught that “God found no vessel to contain His blessings, other than peace.” In Israel, the Priestly Blessing is recited publicly each day by individuals possessing a family tradition that they are among the descendants of Aharon, a group whose lineage has been verified in recent years by DNA testing. We pray every day for the total fulfillment of the Priestly Blessing, when the Jewish people will live peacefully in Eretz Yisrael.Comment

7:1  On the day that Moshe finished setting up the Mishkan, he anointed and consecrated it and all its furnishings, as well as the mizbayach and its utensils. When he had anointed and consecrated them,

3  and brought their offering before Hashem: six draught carts and twelve oxen, a cart for every two chieftains and an ox for each one. When they had brought them before the Mishkan,

4  Hashem said to Moshe:

5  Accept these from them for use in the service of the Tent of Meeting, and give them to the Leviim according to their respective services.

6  Moshe took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Leviim.

7  Two carts and four oxen he gave to the Gershonites, as required for their service,

7:10 The chieftains also brought the dedication offering for the mizbayach

Chapter 7 describes the donations given by the tribal leaders in celebration of the sanctification of the Mishkan. After the donations of the chieftains are accepted, they are inspired to bring offerings in celebration of the dedication of the altar. Following this example, the inaugurations of the First and Second Temples were also celebrated with an abundance of offerings (I Kings 8:62-63, Ezra 6:17). We await the day on which we will celebrate the inauguration of the third Beit Hamikdash in this same manner.3 comments
