25:10  Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying,

11  “Pinchas, son of Elazar son of Aharon the Kohen, has turned back My wrath from the Israelites by displaying among them his passion for Me, so that I did not wipe out B’nei Yisrael in My passion.

25:12 I grant him My pact of friendship

The zealot, Pinchas, sees immoral behavior among the camp of Israel, and immediately responds with an iron fist and a sharp spear. Ironically, Pinchas is rewarded for his violent action with Hashem’s “pact of friendship,” known in Hebrew as brit shalom (ברית שלום), literally ‘covenant of peace.’ With this striking detail, the Torah illustrates a vital lesson. Genuine peace is not merely the absence of conflict. Pinchas did not negotiate with the perpetrators and attempt to achieve a compromise solution. By standing up for his principles, Pinchas demonstrated that only when based on eternal principles of truth and justice can true peace be achieved. A person who internalizes this idea and acts accordingly is a true “friend” of God.2 comments

13  It shall be for him and his descendants after him a pact of priesthood for all time, because he took impassioned action for his God, thus making expiation for the Israelites.’”

26:2   Take a census of the whole Israelite community

This chapter discusses the second census found in the book of Bamidbar. The forty years of wandering in the desert are now over, and the people are finally going to conquer, inherit and divide the land. A count is now necessary, to determine how big their army will be and among how many people the land must be divided. By counting each individual, Hashem conveys the message that each person’s role in conquering and inhabiting the Promised Land is vital. Each person receives his portion, and with it a responsibility to contribute his part to Hashem, the country and the nation.Comment

27:4 Give us a holding among our father’s kinsmen

After it is determined among whom Eretz Yisrael will be divided, the daughters of a deceased man named Tzelofchad approach Moshe with a complaint. The rule of inheritance is that a father’s land is inherited by his sons, but the late Tzelofchad had no sons who could inherit his portion. Moved by a deep love for the Land of Israel, Tzelofchad’s daughters complain that if nothing is done, their family will forever lose its portion of land. Rashi points out that it is no coincidence that the verse traces their lineage back to their forefather Yosef, who served as a model of love for the Promised Land when he made his brothers promise that they would take his remains with them out of Egypt, for burial in Eretz Yisrael. The women are relieved when Hashem clarifies to Moshe that in the absence of sons, a man’s land is to be inherited by his daughters. The passion for Israel exhibited by the daughters of Tzelofchad serves as a model for the special role that women have always played in settling Eretz Yisrael.Comment

5  Moshe brought their case before Hashem.

6  And Hashem said to Moshe,

7  “The plea of Tzelofchad‘s daughters is just: you should give them a hereditary holding among their father’s kinsmen; transfer their father’s share to them.

8  “Further, speak to B’nei Yisrael as follows: ‘If a man dies without leaving a son, you shall transfer his property to his daughter.

27:12 And view the land

Though Moshe was not allowed to enter the Land of Israel, he is given an opportunity to see the land from atop the mountain of Avarim. In verse 12, Hashem tells him to go up to the mountain and “view the land”, and in verse 13 He repeats “when you have seen it.” The double language reflects the notion that Moshe saw beyond the land’s physical beauty. In addition, he was able to perceive its spiritual grandeur as well.Comment

 28:9   On the Shabbat day

Shabbat, the seventh day of the week, is a reminder that God is the creator of the entire world. Just as He created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, we use our creative powers to work for six days, but rest on the seventh. Shabbat also serves as a remembrance of the exodus from Egypt (see Deuteronomy 5:14). Through the miracles associated with the exodus, Hashem demonstrated that He is still very much involved in the world, though He generally works behind the scenes. By keeping the Shabbat, we affirm our belief in Hashem as the Creator who is continuously responsible for everything that happens in the world. The Land of Israel also has a Shabbat of its own, once every seven years. By abandoning the fields during the Sabbatical year and putting our sustenance in the hands of the Lord, we affirm our belief that He is intimately involved in everything that happens in our lives. We owe all of our success to Him, and we believe that He will provide for us, even if we are not working the land.2 comments

 28:11   On your new moons

Judaism follows a calendar with both lunar and solar components. The months are determined by the cycle of the moon, with the new month beginning when the first sliver of moon reappears in the sky at the beginning of a new lunar cycle. At the same time, though, the Jewish calendar has a solar component. Each of the festivals are supposed to fall out during a specific season in Israel, reflected in the agricultural aspects of the holiday. Pesach must fall out during the springtime as the grain begins to ripen, Shavuot celebrates the wheat harvest and the beginning of the fruit harvest in early summer, and Sukkot is celebrated in the beginning of the autumn, at the end of the harvest season. There is, however, an eleven-day discrepancy between the number of days in twelve lunar months and a solar year. To enable the months to follow the cycle of the moon while also ensuring that the holidays are celebrated in the appropriate seasons, a thirteenth month is added to the year seven times in every nineteen-year cycle.Comment

29:35   On the eighth day you shall hold a solemn gathering

This verse mandates an additional “solemn gathering” to be held on the day immediately following the seven days of Sukkot. According to the Sages (Sukkah 55b), the festival of Sukkot has a universal message, demonstrated by the fact that over the course of these seven days, seventy special sacrifices were brought in the Beit Hamikdash, corresponding to the seventy primordial nations of the world. At the completion of the Sukkot holiday, Hashem adds an extra day, as if to say to His people “I don’t want you to leave yet. Let us celebrate one more day together so I can enjoy your exclusive, intimate company.” After celebrating Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and finally Sukkot, Hashem doesn’t want the special time to end. He asks His chosen nation to celebrate with Him alone for one more day. This final day is known as Shemini Atzeret, the ‘eighth day of assembly.’2 comments
